What Do NDEs and Astrology Have in Common?
It’s a compelling question. What could Near Death Experiences and astrology possibly have in common?
For me, the answer is obvious: the life review.
One of the most fascinating & common themes that shows up in Near Death Experience accounts is the life review, a process where the soul seems to gain a much bigger perspective on their lives, their choices, and the experiences they've had.
To me, this feels very much like what I help people do with astrology.
When I sit down with someone to explore their birth chart, it often feels like we're stepping into a mini life review together. Not because we're reliving every event, but because we're creating enough space to see the bigger picture. We get to step outside the usual stories and reactions and look at life from a different vantage point.
In a way, having an astrology reading is like getting the benefits of a life review, without having to have the Near Death Experience. I think that’s a pretty great deal!
But before I explain what I mean, let's talk about NDEs.
What exactly is an NDE? NDE is an acronym for "Near Death Experience." NDEs have been written about throughout history in many different ways. Some accounts in ancient texts don't explicitly name the experience as an NDE, but those who study them can identify the common characteristics.
For example, around 375 BCE, Plato wrote The Myth of Er about a soldier who seemingly dies in battle but comes back to life days later with a mystical story. Around 100 CE, Plutarch wrote The Vision of Thespesius about a man who fell from a great height, was pronounced dead, and then returned to life with an incredible story to tell.
With advancements in modern medicine—especially resuscitation—there are now enormous numbers of NDE accounts available to us. There are even organizations dedicated to collecting and studying these experiences, looking for common themes and patterns.
One source I've followed for many years is the German YouTube channel Thanatos TV EN. There are hundreds of accounts from ordinary people sharing their near-death experiences. NDEs have even become more of a mainstream topic through podcasts such as Mayam Bialik Breakdown.
What fascinates me most about these accounts is what they share in common. Certain themes show up again and again.
Once the death experience occurs in the physical body, the soul often has what is called an OBE, or "out-of-body experience." It's as though the person's awareness pops out of their body and takes on a fly-on-the-wall vantage point. The perspective is often elevated, expansive, and looking down on the scene where their body is located.
Very often, the soul doesn't immediately recognize it as their body. They see the scene, but don't associate themselves with it. After some time, they begin to realize that it's a body they know—a body they've lived an entire life in!
At this point, they are often met by a guide.
The guide frequently appears as a tall being made of light. It may feel like someone they know from the lifetime they just left, or someone they know very well despite never having met them in that life. The guide almost always seems incredibly loving—like your absolute best friend.
It's common for the guide to then bring the soul to what is often called a life review.
In the life review, they do exactly that: they review the life they just came out of. Many different scenes may be explored, but it's as though they're witnessed within a matter of seconds. Time works differently in this space. It's like the soul can download and integrate a huge amount of information all at once.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the life review is that the soul can experience multiple perspectives within a situation. They're no longer locked into their own point of view. In this way, they can often experience an unconditional love for all perspectives—even the really difficult-to-love ones.
After the life review, the guide will often consult with the soul and let them know it's time to go back.
Of course, any NDE account we hear necessarily includes the person returning. If they didn't come back, we wouldn't have the story. There is usually a larger purpose behind why the soul needs to return to the body, and in these accounts that purpose seems to be fully understood.
There are other environments and scenes that commonly appear in NDE reports. Many people describe being brought to a vast library—something akin to the Akashic Records. Others describe a park where loved ones are gathered. Some say their life review took place in what felt like a movie theatre.
While every experience is unique, these are some of the recurring locations and themes.
The part I want to focus on here is the life review. Every time I hear people describe this experience, I find myself thinking about astrology. Not because astrology and NDEs are the same thing, but because both can create a shift in perspective.
During a life review, people often describe being able to see beyond their usual point of view. They can understand the deeper meaning of their experiences and even appreciate perspectives that were difficult to understand while living through them.
When I explore a birth chart with someone, I often see something similar happen. Of course, we're still connected to our bodies, so we still carry all the emotions, attachments, and perspectives associated with our life experiences.
But there is an opening. A sliver of light pokes through the veil during an astrology session.
I like to think of astrology as an opportunity to have a life review without needing to have an NDE. Because, let's face it, you probably don't want to go through a traumatic accident just to gain some perspective.
Not everyone is meant to have an NDE in this lifetime. But you might be able to access some of the same benefits by exploring your birth chart.
This is my invitation to anyone who wants to work with me.
When we step into your chart, I encourage you to imagine that I am one of your guides and that together we are watching your life review unfold. I encourage you to see your stories as incredible learning opportunities.
I truly believe that, from a soul perspective, the challenges, obstacles, lessons, and blessings we experience are extraordinarily interesting. From a soul perspective, it's like: "Holy shit! I want to learn more!"
There is so much value in being able to do this for yourself. To step outside the familiar stories. To look at your life from a wider perspective. To become curious about your patterns instead of trapped inside them. To see your challenges, lessons, and blessings through the eyes of the soul. That's what I hope to offer when I work with people.
A chance to experience a kind of life review—one that doesn't require a Near Death Experience.
